#StopTheILS

The Facts.

The proposed ILS (Instrument Landing System) Flight Path for the Gold Coast will see airliners fly extremely low over our populated coastline.

  • The ILS is always on. It can be used at anytime not just in bad weather.
  • Gold Coast Airport has confirmed it is operating safely without an ILS.
  • The ILS is being proposed to increase reliability. However, figures show that in 2014 the Gold Coast Airport was 99.9% reliable. Only 13 planes were diverted out of 34,000 landings at the airport.
  • An ILS does not guarantee landing in all conditions.
  • Qantas does not support the ILS proposal for the Gold Coast Airport.

Cost versus benefit

Even if a few extra planes can land each year at the airport with the ILS, this benefit does not outweigh the massive cost of:

  • The ILS can be used regardless of weather conditions, meaning planes flying going over the most populated residential and tourist areas of the Gold Coast.
  • Planes over homes of 60,000 Gold Coasters currently unaffected by the Airport.
  • Some of these 60,000 will suffer noise levels so loud that conversations will be disrupted and people will not be able to hear their TVs as planes go over.
  • Tourists who come to relax at the Gold Coast will have planes flying overhead as they relax on beaches, parks and National Parks.
  • Health and safety concerns.
  • Property losses with home owners under the new flight path likely to lose value on their property through no fault of their own.

Let's tell the Federal Government NO

With the close of submissions to the Airport, we are now targetting the ILS decision maker, Minister for Infrastructure, Warren Truss. He will be considering the Airport’s report from mid-August for up to 50 business days after that.

You can help out by signing our paper-based petition that will be presented to Federal Parliament. We need as many people as physically possible to sign by early September.

  • Download a copy of the petition and get others to sign it.
  • Volunteer at our staffed days and times (look for the weekly emails and Facebook) or email us here to help.
  • Post your signed petitions (even if the whole page is not complete) to Stop the Flight Path GC, PO Box 125, Burleigh Heads, 4220 by 31 August 2015.

What does the ILS mean?

1. Low flights over your home.

Real estate sales statistics show that properties located under flight paths are generally less expensive than those in other suburbs. Properties in Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Broadbeach Waters, Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Miami, Burleigh Heads, Burleigh Waters and Palm Beach will all be vulnerable to the effects of the flight path.

2. Noise above our coastline.

As air traffic continues to increase, so will aircraft noise above homes. The environmental assessment by Airservices Australia found there will be a "noticeable” difference in noise levels, exposing residents under the flight path to noise levels of 74dB. This is equivalent to standing next to a loud vacuum cleaner. Let's be famous for fun not famous for noise.

3. It's always on.

The ILS can be used at any time - not just in bad weather. This means up to 80 flights that come into the Gold Coast airport every day could use the new flight path. This number will more than likely grow as the ILS attracts extra air traffic. Airservices states that they are “not able to limit the airport’s operations’.

4. It’s not the only option.

SmartPath, also known as GBAS, is a more modern solution to replace or supplement Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). SmartPath could overcome many of the ILS's technical and operational limitations and can provide significant safety capacity, efficiency and environmental benefits for airlines, airports and air navigation service providers. Gold Coast Airport has said there are no plans to install SmartPath at the Gold Coast Airport
